Edgewater was built in the 1880s as a summer respite for Chicago’s wealthy residents and remains attractive today for its several lakefront beaches, refurbished old architecture and antique shops. Within the community are neighborhoods Andersonville, known for a diverse population, Swedish influence, large LGBT community and many independent shops and restaurants; Edgewater Glen, a tree-lined community with mainly single-family homes; Broadway, the area’s main commercial street; and Sheridan Road/Edgewater Beach, an area of high-rise residential buildings and a few historic mansions.
