The Gold Coast community began with millionaire Potty Palmer building a mansion in the neighborhood in 1882. Many other wealthy families followed Palmer’s lead, quickly making the community one of the most wealthy spots in Chicago and even the second most affluent community in the United States in the 1980s. Today, the Gold Coast clings to its upscale history, with wealthy residents surrounded by of designer and high-end retail stores, famous restaurants, art galleries and theaters. The Museum of Contemporary Art and scenic Oak Street Beach attract both residents and visitors to this neighborhood, focused on retaining its historical significance and beauty over time.
