The Loop is the officially downtown location of Chicago and boasts many of the city’s skyscrapers and most famous historic buildings. Named after the route of a streetcar that served the area in the late 1800s, the Loop had the highest concentration of skyscrapers in the United States in 1900 as well as the tallest building, the Masonic Temple, at the time. Today, many famous buildings still occupy The Loop including the Sears Tower, once also the tallest building in the world and a large commercial spot and tourist attraction; the original Marshall Field’s building, one of the most famous department stores in the country; and City Hall. Other attractions in The Loop include Millenium Park, with a bandshell and famous art installations; Grant Park, home the Buckingham Fountain as well as food festivals and outdoor concerts; the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Theatre. While mainly commercial, The Loop also has many high-rise apartments central to Chicago’s busiest business district and upscale lofts mainly along Printer’s Row, an area of old, converted printing presses.
