Once predominantly an Italian-American neighborhood, Pilsen, also known as the Lower West Side, has been a majority Hispanic neighborhood since the 1970s. Mexican murals decorate the neighborhood that also features a large number of Mexican restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores with a strip of Italian restaurants standing as a memoir to its history. Part of Pilsen is also one of Chicago’s largest art districts, with several galleries as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art. Due to the influx of artists in the area, some Chicagoans are predicting it will be the next big neighborhood in the city.
