River North began as an industrial district and when big businesses moved out, artists moved in to occupy the large loft space they left behind. Today, River North is famous for its many galleries (the largest concentration in the United States outside of Manhattan), antique stores and the Merchandise Mart, an upscale mall specializing in home décor. The art-scene attracts man tourists, as does the large number of restaurants featuring several theme restaurants, but River North is also a popular area for Chicago residents with pricey lofts as well as apartment high-rises available for rent.
