An early 1900 resort-town, Uptown has its roots in leisure and entertainment. Featuring several jazz clubs, theaters and a movie studio, Uptown played a part in the jazz movement, silent films, the swing and big band eras and the onset of rock and roll. The Great Depression sent the neighborhood into decline, and low cost of living in the area meant an influx of immigrant populations which can be seen today in the cultural diversity of Uptown which includes the Chicago’s Little Vietnam district. Famous theaters and jazz clubs from Uptown’s early days remain in operation today, making Uptown still a popular spot for entertainment and cultural dining experiences. Nearby Lincoln Park provides plenty of green space as well as running and biking paths and a beach that includes a dog run.
