Once inhabited by wealthy European-Americans who built mansions on its tree-lined boulevards, Washington Park became a largely African-American neighborhood in the 1920s as former residents flocked to private communities and today is home to one of the nation’s largest African American history museums the DuSable Museum of African American History. The residences in the area surround the area’s namesake park which was home to the 1893 World’s Fair and is celebrated for its popular cultural festivals today. Rents in the area tend to be low, and the neighborhood is convenient via public transportation to many of Chicago’s educational and commercial institutions.
